Remembrance Day Service 2022

Our Derrick Gardens memorial area at Centennial Park was established in 1956 and is named after WWII Victoria Cross recipient, Lieutenant Thomas ‘Diver’ Derrick. This designated area for returned and current service personnel is the final resting place of more than 4,500 service men and women. At the base of Derrick Gardens is the Cross of Remembrance, protected by two towering pine trees reputably sown from original seedlings from Lone Pine in Gallipoli.

Springbank Secondary College assisted us with the placement of Australian flags on the memorials in Derrick Gardens in the lead-up to our Remembrance Day Service. Students braved the heat on the day, and did a wonderful job placing a flag at each memorial, with some finding resting family members and others reflecting on their own family’s sacrifices.

On Remembrance Day, Friday 11 November, representatives from State Government, local councils, the Army, Navy and Air Force, Returned Services League, ex-service organisations, and local schools joined together to honour sacrifices made by those serving our country in wars or armed conflicts.

Walford Anglican School for Girls Choir provided renditions of ‘The Distant Call of Home’, ‘In Flanders Fields’ and our ‘National Anthem’ and the official procession was led by Scotch College Pipes and Drums Band.

The Catafalque Party was comprised of members from Re-enact SA and accompanied Cadets from the Australian Navy, Australian Army and Australian Air Force.
